Advocacy Agenda

During 2012, Lutheran Advocacy Ministry-NM will support public policies in the following categories:
 
Affordable Housing & Homelessness
     Programs that assist children & adults experiencing homelessness
    
Family-Sustaining Income
     Restoration of funding cuts made to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program
     Restoration of cuts made to child care assistance & quality early childhood programs

    
Health Care
     Effective implementation of federal health care reform in New Mexico
     Maintaining Medicaid coverage & benefits for low-income children & adults
 
Hunger
     Increased enrollment in nutrition assistance programs
     Restoration of funding for the state Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program
     Efforts to close New Mexico’s food gap & funding for food banks
     Maintaining the state Elementary School Breakfast program
 
Tax Policy
     Tax policy that is fair and provides stable, necessary & adequate revenue to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our state
     Effective oversight & review of state tax credits, exemptions & incentives
 
Immigration
     Comprehensive immigration reform advocated by the Lutheran Immigration & Refugee Service

The ELCA constitution states "In faithfulness to its calling, this church is committed to defend human dignity, to stand with the poor and powerless people, to advocate justice, to work for peace, and to care for the earth in the processes and structures of contemporary society."
